“A good design should always be about comfort” – says, Dipali Patwa, who is bringing women together through her socially conscious company – “MASALA BABY” – An international kids lifestyle brand. It was a great experience meeting her and getting to know about her story and the discovery of her brand.
Dipali says, she started her journey with “SEWA” in 1996 as a design consultant following her passion for fashion designing, which gave her an opportunity to work with women artisans to bring their talents on the national as well as international platforms, helping these women and their families sustain.
Her itch for creativity then took her to “FAB INDIA“, in 1998, as one of their first creative directors. This role took her to places across India getting her to work alongside various traditional craftsmen and artisan communities. All of that experience led to the introduction of new print and woven products using handmade techniques. She also successfully introduced print collections incorporating vegetable dyeing and block printing.
Since 2000, she accumulated experience for a decade by working with top brands like Town and Country Living, Ralph Lauren, Martha Stewart Everyday, Bershka, Laura Ashley, Badgley Mischka, Royal Velvet, Jaclyn Smith and Better Homes & Garden.
She says, her passion and her mission to work with fair trade manufacturers, source real organic cotton and build a team that was able to balance work and life led to the birth of “MASALA BABY” in 2010.
Dipali started with a mere 10,000$, 10 tunics and an all women team and has come a long way since then by adding many more designs and products to her collection without the fear of failure.
I had an opportunity to unveil one of their creations and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. The fabric is extremely soft and skin friendly. Their prints are vibrant and lively. It’s true to its name which suggests amalgamation of colors and texture with comfort and style. I would highly recommend their collection, specially for newborns who need that softness against their skin.
All the products for MASALA BABY are made in India, in partnership with women led manufacturing units and artisan groups. It brings women together from east to west, giving them an opportunity to explore their creative sides. It runs operations out of New York with an ALL WOMEN TEAM.
